Environment

Carbon neutral. Mercury-free. On the road to zero waste.

We've been a chemical company since 2014, and a carbon-neutral one since 2020. Here's what that means in practice — and what we're still working on.

Fewer tankers on Brazil’s roads.

By 31 Dec 2026, Chlorum's six Brazilian plants will have displaced about 3.22 million tonnes of 12% hypo. That is about 107,300 tanker loads and ~554 million truck-km not traveled (round trip). The avoided haul is worth about 221 million litres of diesel and ~593,000 tonnes of CO2 not released.

Case study · Igarassu, PE

Closing a mercury plant, and cleaning up after it.

When we bought the Igarassu plant, it was running on mercury-cell technology. We took on the obligation to decommission it, closed it on time for the Minamata Convention deadline, and committed to remediation that goes beyond what local legislation requires. We take our responsibility to improve the environment seriously.

01 · Acquisition

Bought as an operating mercury plant

We acquired Igarassu with its mercury-cell process still in operation.

02 · Obligation

Took over decommissioning

The obligation to decommission the mercury plant came with the acquisition, and we accepted it.

03 · 12/31/2025

Closed on time

The mercury plant was shut down in time to meet the Minamata Convention deadline.

04 · Remediation

Beyond what the law requires

We have taken responsibility for site remediation above and beyond local legislation.

Mercury electrolysis hall

We invested in a plant we knew we would close.

We put significant capital into the mercury electrolysis hall knowing it would be shut down, to make sure it ran without an environmental incident until the last day. Few other operators would have made that investment, and the previous owners had not.

Track record

A timeline we keep.

2020

First year carbon neutral

Verified Carbon Standard offsets across all operations, plus 100% renewable energy contracts.

2021

Held it. Reported it.

Second consecutive year carbon neutral, with full third-party verification.

2022

Effluent reduction targets set

Public commitment to a 30% reduction in process effluents by 2025 across the fleet.

2023

Salary transparency report

First annual public report on equal pay and salary transparency across all operations.

2026

Mercury-free certified

All seven plants confirmed using membrane technology only — no mercury anywhere in our process.

2028

Zero-waste push

Effluent reduction target hit early. Now closing the loop on solid waste from process and packaging.
