Solutions

Five molecules. Endless applications.

Every Chlorum plant is engineered to produce a tailored mix of chlor-alkali outputs — delivered onsite by short pipeline, on demand, with zero tanker logistics. And through Chlorum Distribution, we complete the basket with the chemicals we don't make ourselves.

Three business lines

Industry · Water · Distribution.

The process

From salt and water to essential chemicals.

The chlor-alkali process is the foundation for many essential products that support industries and everyday life. Here's how Chlorum's membrane plants turn brine into a full product family.

The overall reaction

Everything we make starts with one reaction: salt dissolved in water, split by electricity. Three products come out — hydrogen, chlorine, and caustic soda — and every item in our portfolio derives from them.

1 Electrolysis of brine

Brine in. Three molecules out.

Salt (NaCl) is dissolved in water (H₂O) to make brine. The brine flows through a membrane electrolyzer where DC electricity separates it into hydrogen gas, chlorine gas, and caustic soda. The membrane keeps Cl⁻ and Na⁺ on opposite sides — that's the whole trick.

Hydrogen (H₂)
2 H₂O + 2 e⁻ → H₂ + 2 OH⁻ · at the cathode
Gas. A clean co-product — feedstock for HCl, industrial heat, and emerging hydrogen markets.
Chlorine (Cl₂)
2 Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2 e⁻ · at the anode
Gas. Used for water disinfection, PVC manufacturing, and as feedstock for HCl and sodium hypochlorite.
Caustic Soda (NaOH)
Na⁺ + OH⁻ → NaOH · cathode side
Aqueous solution. Essential for pulp & paper, alumina refining, soaps, textiles, and food processing.
2 Further reactions

Two derivatives unlock half our customer base.

Combine chlorine with hydrogen and you get hydrochloric acid (HCl). React it with caustic soda and you get sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Both are produced onsite, on demand — never trucked.

MixCl₂+H₂
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Cl₂ + H₂ → 2 HCl
Aqueous solution. Used in metal pickling, oil-well stimulation, food, and chemical synthesis.
MixCl₂+NaOH
Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl)
Cl₂ + 2 NaOH → NaOCl + NaCl + H₂O
Aqueous solution. Used as a disinfectant, bleach, and in water treatment.
